How To Improve Your Communication Skills as an Engineer :

srimanta@brainware-india.com'

What do you think when you hear the word ‘’Engineer’’? A person with mathematical aptitude. A person with great analytical skills, a person with decent problem solving talents – a person with a technical bent of mind.

However an engineer with superior communication skills is often seen as an anomaly. Engineers are hailed as technical people with superior tech related skills and low to non existent communication/soft skills.

However with the changing times, an engineer can no longer afford to be in his lone Ivory Tower with his tools. If you want to secure and maintain a decent career, polishing your communication skills along with technical skill is a must .

Start Mingling with Students of other Departments : The one mistake many engineering students do, is to limit their interaction with other engineering peers. Go out and interact with students from other streams such as B Com, BBA and Humanities. Mingling with these graduates will not only broaden your perspective but will also sharpen your communication skills, as these graduates tend to have better soft skills.

Start Reading the Newspaper Daily : Read newspapers like The Times of India, The Hindu, The Telegraph etc. You will get to know more about the current affairs ( always a big help if you attempt competitive exams later on) and you will improve your vocabulary to a big extent.

Start Participating in Extracurriculars : Participating in extracurriculars such as public speaking, debates, recitation, dramatics can help improve your communication and soft skills by a large extent.

Avoid Using Technical Jargon After Graduation : Once you graduate and step into the professional world, keep usage of technical jargons at bare minimum. The more lucidly you can explain tech concepts and ideas to non engineers, the more valuable you will become as a communicator.
