Top Mechanical Engineering Interview Questions :

The entire purpose of an interview is to understand the candidate and his her suitability for the particular job/position they have applied for. In case of engineers, they have to go through both technical round – to gauge their technical skills and aptitude in their field as well as non technical interview to examine their suitability for the job role as well as a fit for the company. Today we will discuss some of the top questions asked to mechanical engineers during an interview.

What Are The Skills of an Engineer?
Ans : The basic purpose of this question is to check your aptitude in your field. If asked this particular question, don’t make the answer too generic, but quickly delve into the skills pertaining to your discipline – in this case mechanical engineering and also relates as to how you have an exercise those skills till date. They are looking for a person who is aware of the assets/skills he can bring to the table, and has a total understanding of the profession and what it entails.

What was the first machine you designed?

Ones; The answer doesn’t have to be the latest, complicated machine you innovated/designed for a major client recently. The employer is looking for a passion in engineering, a long history of innovation as well as evidence that you have troubleshooting experience.

How will you explain a car’s wheel and axle system to non engineers?

Ans : A valuable quality of an engineer is the ability to explain technical terms to non engineers in simple and lucid terms. So you should explain how axle serves the dual purpose of bearing some of the weight of the car and helps the steering system turn the wheels.

What are the different kinds of fits? :

Ans : On the basis of Indian standards, fits can be classified into 3 groups viz; Clearance Fit – These types of fits occur when two mating parts meet. Interference Fit – The size of the mating parts predetermine this type of fit, and transition fit – This type of fit ensures that the mating parts are designed in such a way so as to allow either clearance or interference.

What are the names given to constant temperature, constant pressure, constant volume, constant internal energy, constant enthalpy, constant entropy process?

Ans : Constant temperature – Isothermal. Constant pressure – Isochroic. Constant volume – Isobaric. Constant Internal Energy : Free Expression, Constant Enthalpy – throttling and Constant Entropy – adiabatic procedure.

Enthalpy and Entropy are functions of which single parameter?

Ans ; Temperature

Explain the second law of thermodynamics :

Ans : The entropy of the universe increases over time and moves towards a maximum value.

Explain enthalpy .

Ans ; Enthalpy is the heat content of a chemical system.

Why is hydraulics preferable over pneumatics?

Ans – Hydraulics are suitable for higher forces and precise motion than pneumatics. This is because hydraulics are available at higher pressure than pneumatic systems. The movements are more precise and repeatable as hydraulics use an incompressible liquid to transfer power whereas pneumatics use gases.

The main benefits of pneumatics is that they are cheaper, can move faster ( as gas is much less viscous than oil) and do not leak oil if they develop leaks.

What is the Bauschinger effect?

Ans – According to Bauschinger the limit of proportionality of material never stays constant, but differs according to the direction of stress under cyclic stresses.
