Campus placements at the year end is something all of us especially those of us studying engineering and MBA courses will have to face.

Campus placements are extremely important to students. Campus placements lead to jobs. Through campus placements, the students take the first step into the professional world.

Not getting placed or missing out on a good placement ( placement with a decent package) is the chief cause of depression and frustration.

In this essay we will discuss some tips on how to crack campus interviews with elan.

Homework : Treat the interview as a regular interview. As we have espoused in so many blogs here, doing some basic homework before appearing for the interview. And that means read up as much as you can on the company interviewing you. Read up the current market trends in the sector the company is associated with. Read up on their competitors. Conduct research  on the mission, vision and the accomplishments of the firm interviewing you.

All companies prefer a candidate that’s well informed and have an aptitude for identifying the problems the company is going through and solving it. So coming across as observant and well informed will set you apart from other candidates

Develop a solid core knowledge : The employers are anxious to hire young professionals who have a solid grasp of their discipline.  Factors like etiquette, soft skills are all secondary when it comes to your actual knowledge. If you fail to display a sound knowledge of your basics then you will be rejected.

For example if you are an CS engineering student, make sure you have a good grasp over core subjects like OOPs Concept, Programming Languages etc. If you are a Civil engineer develop sound knowledge over soil mechanics, building materials, engineer surveying, structural analysis etc.

Only Apply To Jobs In Which You Have Relevant Skills : This means that avoid applying to a job, just because it has an attractive salary, perks and compensation benefits. The interviewers would immediately see through your intention, and form a very negative impression. Only apply for jobs in which you have developed some relevant skills and have a genuine interest in.

Ask Your Own Questions : Don’t be afraid or hesitant to ask your own queries regarding the job profile, day to day responsibilities. A healthy dose of inquisitiveness is always appreciated by recruiters

Admit Ignorance : There are bound to be questions whose answers are unknown to you. If so, be straightforward and tell the interview board that you don’t know. Attempting to answer questions whose answers you don’t know is foolish.

Be Confident : Remember the recruiters are not there to harass you. So when you receive some offbeat or off topic questions be creative and come up with your own answers. Employers value people that can think under the box, and remain calm under pressure.
