You had got everything going for you. A great resume, extraordinary academic record- the picture perfect GPA, just the right amount of publications, great references etc, and even relevant work experience – even after all this you failed to bag the job offer! You were bypassed by the employer and another not so illustrious candidate with a not so remarkable CV was selected. Here in this essay we will discuss some of the top probable reason why you didn’t grab the job despite being the star candidate.
Your Resume Has Too Much ( Unrelated ) Information : Many freshers commit this mistake. Many resumes have the ‘’list your hobbies’’ section. Many students go wild listing all their hobbies from reading fashion magazines, to browsing cat videos on YouTube. Recruiters get turned off by these applications. Resumes are impersonal and you should as far as possible omit personal stuff unless they correlate to job requirements. Ex : mention you love reading fashion magazines only if you are applying to fashion related job.
You have failed to include a good cover letter : Don’t be lazy and send CV without cover letter. Many graduates argue, all my qualifications and other information is covered by CV why should I bother writing a cover letter? The answer is that the cover letter will act as an introduction of sorts for you, where you can discuss why you are fit for this job, what makes you the ideal candidate for the job. Cover Letters are your personal promotional vehicle. Keep in mind that recruiters go through thousands of CVs per day. Without attractive cover letter, your CV will go to the bin
You are Absent From Social Media, Or Have Embarrassing Pictures : Nowadays it’s a trend for employers to trawl the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram accounts of prospective employees and keep an eye of what they are upto. If you have pictures of you passed out drunk, dressed skimpily, in questionable company, your resume will be rejected.
You are a Show -off : Being Confident is commendable. Being a show off isn’t.
You have Unrealistic Salary Expectations : Salary will be commensurate with experience and skills acquired. If you are just out of college, demanding 6 figure salary is too far fetched to come true. Do a quick research what someone with your profile and experience can expect to get and ask for that salary.
You Have Failed To Do Research : Before applying to a company, conduct some basic research about the mission, vision, objectives, awards won by the company. If you fail to do this then you will come across as foolish and ignorant and the company will suspect you have just randomly applied for a job you are not even apt for.
