However just considering yourself to be creative does not alas translate to being a skilled animator. To become an animator you need to have certain skills . We will be listing the essential skills one by one here –

Drawing Abilities : Goes without saying. One of the primary duties of an animator is to envisage characters – and the best way to do so is to sketch out these characters on paper. Skilled animators are adept at drawing different characters and can also emulate the drawing style of a famous animator if need be.

Technical Skills : Animators also need some basic technical skills as they will need to use various multimedia tools like Adobe Flash, 3D Studio Max, Autodesk Maya, CAD etc. So a thorough computer literacy is a must.

Graphic Design Skills : One of the main duties of an animator is to bring fantasies to life and make it more life like. For this animators need to have adequate knowledge of  graphics, and visual effects as well .  Often an animator will need not to make the elements move, but also create them. So a good knowledge of 2D elements can you a competitive candidate here.

Sense of Timing & Spacing : This is a must have skill for animators . To make the characters look more life like, an acute sense of time and space is essential. Through this skill the animator can make the animated character perform lifelike activities like blinking, reaction and emoting like a flesh and blood person would in certain situations.

Detail Oriented : Animators need to be detail oriented. This is because attention to detailing is needed when one is creating characters – each character needs to have a distinct way of talking, reacting, walking etc. So here unless one’s detail oriented one will falter.

3D Design Skills : 3D elements have found their way to motion designing and as an animator you need to be competent enough to learn 3D.

Expertise : Nowadays many employers want more than an animator generalist. They seek an animator who has developed an expertise on a certain domain such as Modeling, Lighting and Production Management

Business Acumen : Last but not the least a good knowledge of economics won’t go amiss. This will help you to work within a budget. A good animator is desirable, but a good animator who can adapt himself/herself to different budgets and can provide high quality output even on low budget will be desirable wherever they go.
