Mentoring Programme at the Brainware Group of Institutes

As recorded in the Odyssey, Mentor was a loyal adviser of Odysseus entrusted with the care and education of the latter’s son, Telemachus. Later the disguised Athena also played ‘mentor’ to Telemachus encouraging him and furnishing him with practical plans for dealing with personal dilemmas. For functioning as “wise advisors,” the name ‘mentor’ has been added to the English vocabulary as a term meaning someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with the naïve and the inexperienced.

This year, at Brainware, the teachers will conduct mentoring of the 1st year students. In a new ambience, amidst unfamiliar people, and away from home it is obvious that the young adults will feel lost. Additionally, certain issues might crop up at times, which they would be incompetent to deal with and thus feel bothered. Who would assist them? While parents or guardians care for their children at home, the youngsters need someone outside as well who will aid and advise them. Here comes the teachers as mentors – in them the students discover their friend, philosopher and guide.

For the successful execution of counseling students from each department, they are divided into groups of ten to twelve and then placed under a particular teacher who is assigned with the task of mentoring a specific group. The students are expected to submit their personal details to their respective mentors in writing at the earliest. Once the log is created, the teachers will sit with his or her group once a week and chat with them amiably- the students can intimate the mentor with their causes of anxiety, things that are creating inconvenience, complications or mess that they have gotten into, and so on.

The teachers have crucial and rather extensive duties to perform here. The teacher must appear before the students as a confidante, and lend a hand to each student. The mentor will carry out the dual role of Sanskrit ‘man-tar’ (“one who thinks) and Latin ‘mon-i-tor’ (“one who admonishes”).While addressing the students’ needs, the teachers will also have to see if the students are playing truant, if they are doing their assignments in time, if they are conducting themselves properly, and initiate necessary amendments accordingly. The teachers might have to channelize certain problems to the higher authorities and see to the fact that the students’ worries are calmed.
In fine, it is an informal transmission of knowledge, support, and encouragement to the students that mentoring will seek to achieve. The aim is to remove impediments obstructing the pathway of our mentees and help them improve themselves, advance, and thus foster growth.

Currently, the mentoring programme is going on rigorously at Brainware.
