How To Avoid Getting Ragged in College :

Ragging  is one of the most persistent problems at most colleges and universities of India. It is a phenomenon which sullies the joyful, enriching environments universities are supposed to be. Ragging is simply a synonym of bullying at colleges. Ragging however can range from simple bullying/humiliation/belittling over one’s  perceived shortcomings such as appearance, social status

etc to downright physical assault, sexual harassment etc.

Ragging is something which can turn one’s college experience from a fond memory to one of the worst nightmares. So we have decided to share some tips on how to avoid being ragged.

According to psychologists ragging occurs due to several reasons –

  • Misplaced Superiority Complex : Many seniors rag juniors – as they consider freshers and juniors as easy/soft targets of bullying – as a means to assert their power over someone they see as a subordinate .

  • Chain reaction – Many raggers/bullies are reported to have been victims of severe ragging themselves. This creates a certain psychological state where they try to inflict the same torture on others which they themselves have undergone.

  • Immaturity : In quite a few cases the seniors or classmates fail to discriminate when they are transgressing from plain leg pulling/joking to outright ragging or harassment. They fail or neglect to detect when their jokes have crossed limits and is making their target uncomfortable or distressed.

In case you find yourself on the receiving point of ragging you can take these following steps –

Contact the Anti Ragging Cell : The moment you feel uncomfortable interacting by any of your seniors, do contact the anti ragging cell and make them aware of your predicament. Don’t wait or delay – then you passively encourage bullying behaviour.

Avoid drunken people : In most of the ragging cases reported in India, the raggers/abusers were reported to have been in an inebriated state. Many people when their inhibition and tongues loosened by alcohol commit crimes. So in any party or get together it’s best if you avoid a group of seniors who are drinking or are drunk.

Be confident : Treat your seniors with respect – after all seniors are the people who will guide you into the college life, help you out academically etc. But never ever cower or falter in your interactions with them, Remember though you might be younger and more newer/stranger to college culture you are no less than them!
