Today we will discuss the various ways you can prepare for an interview. The interview is the final obstacle standing between you and your job. During the interview you do not only have to validate the information ( regarding your educational and professional qualifications), but you also have to sell yourself.
An interview typically will also test your self promotion skills, communication skills as well as you have to convince your potential employers that why you are a better choice than other candidates. One of the greatest all time favourite questions of your potential employer is : ”Why should we hire you?” You have to come up with a suitable answer, that is confident, without sounding too arrogant.
So basically the interview is a critical evaluation of you and your talents/skills. Therefore preparing for an interview in the correct way, is absolutely essential if you want to make a good impression on your prospective employer. First of all not all interviews are conducted face to face. We will discuss some of the popular form of interviews that are conducted to recruit candidates today.
- Telephonic interview : The employer holds the discussion over a telephone. The candidates are filtered on the basis of basic criteria. If you pass this interview you will be called for one on one interview.
- Video : This is quickly becoming one of the more popular ways to recruit candidates for sales/advertising and marketing jobs. These interviews are conducted over Skype, FaceTime etc.
- One to one : The classic interview, where potential employers ask you the typical interview questions like ”why this job?” ”Why you want to work with us?” so on and so forth.
- Panel : This is quite similar to personal one to one interviews except that instead of just one person, you will be interviewed by multiple people from thye firm.
- Group Interview : This can be more stressful at times. Multiple candidates are interviewed at the same time. Ther candiadtes are asked to discuss or debate on a particular topic. Points are awarded for providing logical arguements backed by facts. A lot will depend on whether you are able to come up with spontaneous arguements, as little to no time is given to candidates to prepare for an answer.
Now we will discuss some of the ways through which you can prepare yourself for an interview.
- Do a thorough research on the background of the company. Appearing clueless on a job interview is every candidates nightmare, and you can keep it from coming true, by studying up on the company’s long term goals, who they are, what they do, who they work with, which industry they specialise in. Every company wants a candidate who is well versed or at least familiar with the company policies.
- Address the problem areas of your CV if any. This is particularly applicable if you have some problem areas like a low GPA (grade point average) or a particularly unfruitful work experience. Don’t hope that they will somehow be overlooked during the interview. The interviewers will bring up any shortcomings listed in your CV and you will have to answer them gracefully.
- Also do some background research on the job/designation you are applying for. Carefully r read the key responsibilities and the skills required in order to align them to your own .
- Do a thorough reading of the company’s social media profile, business reports, corporate social responsibility strategy etc, so that you can put forth your own opinions regarding them at your interview. Prospective employers will be able to see that you are enthusiastic and aware of the company affairs and can come up with creative solutions to company problems.
- Research the current market trends, particularly those which are adopted by the competitor and related job sector…you can provide useful insights, and the company will be more likely to shortlist you.
- Just like actors do before an audition, also practice for your interview in front of the mirror. If you have a speech problem like stammering or stuttering practise is your best friend. You do not want to appear awkward in front of the interviewers do you?
- If the interview is being conducted via telephone, connect your prospective employer to your LinkedIn profile, they would be able to see first hand your accomplishments and reccomendations. Also keep a pen & notepad within reach.
- If appearing for a second round interview, try to address those questions you were unable to give a satisfactory answer to in the first one.
