Interview: Body Language Dos and Don’ts

Body language and personality grooming are integral to the first impression as you appear for an interview before a prospective recruiter. It has a significant impact right from the moment you step in through the door. Herein are some of the dos and don’ts you should abide by if you are to crack it the right way.

Do’s

Making eye contact:

Establishing an eye contact is the thumbs-rule to start off an interview the right way. It impacts a positive impression, reflects your confidence and involvement in the discussion. Make sure not to prolong the eye contact for too long that it amounts to a stare, and you don’t want that either. In case you have more than one interviewer to answer to, then make sure to alternately address each of them.

Smiling is the key:

A frowned, tensed face can be counterproductive. Nodding and smiling at appropriate points establishes a positive connection with the interviewer and demonstrates your attentiveness to the speaker. However, do not overdo it. Keep your voice soft and calm as you reciprocate with your interviewer.

Maintain the right posture:

The celebrated image consultant Alison Craig, the author of Hello Job! How to Psych Up, Suit Up, & Show Up agrees that put body gives our true feelings away. Hence, what we speak should be well mirrored in our body language. It is recommended that you place nothing on the table save your slim portfolio. The rest of your belongings would be placed beside you and not on your lap. Maintain a relaxed but a firm body posture, as you sit up straight. Keep your hand gesturing to the minimum, which otherwise indicates aggressiveness. Nail biting, clench fisting are a strict no-no!

Don’ts

Slouch:

Sitting too relaxed, hunched forward is not recommended. It indicates a lack of confidence and disinterestedness of the candidate. Right from the moment you arrive the reception area of the interview, you are being monitored. So be sure to make the right entry.

Be careful of the little gestures:

Body language experts are of the opinion that simple gestures like that of excessive touching of hair and nose reflects an individual’s dishonesty and untrustworthiness. The same implies in case of sitting cross-armed. It makes you look unapproachable and defensive. Optimism and expressiveness is integral to your outlook and adds to your confidence. Also keep your shoulders relaxed while interacting with your recruiters. Taking care of these small gestures get half the job done in an interview.

Wearing makeup and deodorant:

You attend an interview to exhibit your professional skills for a job. It is an imperative that you abide by a proper dress code. Wearing casuals are not allowed in a professional environment. Application of too strong a deodorant or perfume will act on the negative side. Women should be careful with their makeup. Application of heavy makeup is against the corporate rules. Try sticking to soft or no makeup look. Men should be careful of their hair styles.

Lastly, having said it all, do not forget to bid a graceful goodbye. A light and firm handshake is not only a part of professional formalities, but also adds to your confidence. Make your exit as graceful as you entry, and you will win half the game.
