Have you ever experienced a niggling feeling of unease during an interview? Did you actually feel that the interviewer or the interviewing panel is making you feel uneasy, even distressed? Then chances are that you are in a stress interview.
Stress interview is a special type of interview where the recruiters subject the candidates to ‘’uncomfortable’’ questions that can range to completely off topic questions – which has nothing or little to do with what you ( the candidate) has prepared for. Stress interview can also involve continuous questions/interrogation ( commonly known as grilling) on some part of your CV you are not proud of – such as a low GPA, a not so stellar work experience, a not so good recommendation letter etc.
The basic purpose of a stress interview is to examine whether or not you can handle psychologically stressful/emotionally demanding situations with calm and equanimity. The employer basically seeks to gauge your emotional maturity, your ability to handle stressful questions calmly. Many candidates in fact gets out of their element in stress interviews and mess up badly.
Today we will share some tips and tricks as to how you can pass stress interviews with flying colours without losing peace of mind.
Stay Calm : Remember, the recruiter is not there to bully you ( although at that time it might seem like it!) He or she just wants to test the waters with you, to evaluate your communication skills, and how you handle stressful situations. If you have received an interview – this means that they think you as an eligible candidate and is now just trying to assess you better. Most of the jobs related to management are not devoid of stress, and you will have to handle demanding situations frequently
Stay Objective and Logical : The key is to appear logical, rational at any cost. Don’t give in to emotions. Showing that you are getting affected – crying, biting nails, shaking etc, will leave a very negative impression to the employer and will show that you are unable to handle stress like a mature person, and that you are unable to take heavy responsibilities. Never show cracks in your armour.
Accept where you went wrong : If you have a poor UG GPA address it when questioned. If you had a less than impressive employment record somewhere, own up to it. Take responsibility for your failures. Accept where you went wrong. and how you have redeemed yourself to it. Being honest and owning up to mistakes is always appreciated.
Ask Questions : If you need some clarification regarding a question, don’t be afraid to ask questions to the employer. Asking questions will display inquisitiveness which is always appreciated by employers.
Don’t Try To Be Oversmart : If you genuinely do not know the answer to a question, admit your ignorance. Don’t try to come up with inane answers. Here again honesty will win you brownie points.
