Recession is a great problem of India as well as in West Bengal. So long we have been suffering deeply from the unemployment problem in general, and in particular we are much concerned about people having degree in general course remaining either unemployed or under employed, as the job prospect is very meagre in this field. On the contrary, for the last few years, we have observed people having technical qualification to get jobs in different type of construction work related industries. But now-a-days these types of projects have reduced causing a decrease in Civil Engineering jobs. About 20 years before, the number of engineering colleges in West Bengal was limited. At that time a huge number of students went outside of West Bengal for engineering study. But now-a-days, a huge number of private Engineering Colleges are set up in our state. Naturally number of Civil Engineers has also gradually increased every year but in comparison to that there are not enough job opportunities. As a result Engineering unemployment has grown gradually day by day.
According to the present survey carried out by a number of agencies more than 70% graduate Civil Engineers are not employed. In India, around 6 lakhs Civil Engineers pass out every year. Corporate report shows that it is impossible to give job opportunities to all the fresher engineers because every industry has limited opportunities to recruit fresher. India does not have sufficient capital and infrastructure and hence the level of research and development is very poor. There are very little job opportunities in core engineering sectors in India. At present companies wants multi-taskers who are technically sound, know how to interact with clients, marketing etc. which is not so easy to find out from fresh graduates.
According to career consultant Mr Jayprakash Gandhi civil engineers will get good job opportunities by 2018. The union government will decide to improve road sector and that will open good job opportunities for civil engineers. The central Government has taken a project for constructing 6000 km express way all over the country, where at present there is only 1324 km expressway. He also said at Hindu Education Plus Career Counselling Programme at Vellor Institute of Technology, Vellor, 2014 that big corporates like Reliance and Tata are going to invest approximate 3000 crores (INR) in areas such as soil development or ground improvement.
Civil Engineering is the mother of all engineering branches. Its condition will be better within few years. Development will not stop.
