‘’ So why do you want to join our company ?’’ The usual response to this particular question, ranges from bewilderment, to plain confusion. Some job seekers will at least attempt to string out some coherent words together, while the rare candidate will be able to provide a coherent, relevant and articulate answer.
One of the classic all time favourite questions with recruiters is ‘’why you want to join us? ‘’ This question is asked by prospective employers to gauge whether the candidate is looking for a particular job, or just any job. It is essential for employers to determine whether a candidate is genuinely interested and meets the basic criteria of the job he/she has applied for. As cliched as it sounds, employees are one of the most valuable assets of the company. An efficient and enthusiastic employee is the ultimate asset to a firm, as it can grow, develop and profit through such an employee.
On the other hand an employee who is detached/dispassionate about his/her job, is clueless about his/her responsibilities and cannot perform his/her job with a modicum of efficiency is nothing but a liability to the company. When a potential recruiter is asking this particular question, what he is trying to evaluate is how passionate/motivated you are towards this job, how much you know about the company, its mission vision, its specialization and achievements and how you can contribute to it. It’s the basic way through which employers can filter candidates who are here ‘’just looking for a job/any job’’ and the sincere earnest candidate who has applied to a job he is fully qualified for and is actually enthusiastic about.
In many ways an interviewer is much like that cute boy or girl you are out on a date with. No date wants to hear that they have been a last resort for you, or how you are here as you have found someone willing to go with you. So no interviewer wants to hear that you are here simply because you read that the firm had some job vacancies, ‘’I am here because I need a job’’ is literally the worst answer you can have. On the other hand the company also wants to avoid starstruck candidates who just wants to be associated with a brand name.
Just as a beautiful girl doesnt want to hear that you only like her for her looks, a company doesn’t want to know about your dream to work for xyz brand. This just makes you look like a shallow opportunist, who will not hesitate to ditch your present company and aim for a ‘’bigger brand’’ if the opportunity came your way. In this essay we will give discuss some alternative ways in which you can answer this question.
‘’ I have read how this software firm believes and rewards in the spirit of innovation. I feel that working in this company will give me a good opportunity to exercise my passion for innovation. ‘’ Cite some examples on the latest awards won by the company, for its cutting edge technology and unique products etc. Also don’t just talk about how you are passionate about invention, coding/programming/ whatever skills your desired designation demands, tell them about your love for coding, how you have forever been involved in creating websites, how you have acquired a relevant professional certificate etc.
‘’ I have a friend/relative who works in this particular firm or organization, who has talked profusely about the scope for growth and development the company provides for its employees and how motivation and progression are rewarded. Try to talk eloquently on the dominant culture of the company, and how you are an ideal fit into the particular work culture.
Show how you are a perfect fit for this particular job, by espousing relevant skills. Companies always look for candidates who can solve a particular problem, so you can reply how you can satisfy the job descriptions. If say an investment bank is looking for a professional who can handle portfolio management as well as alternative investments, then bring up how you have relevant professional certificate courses like CFA ( Chartered Financial Analyst) and FRM ( Financial Risk Management) certification, or how you have had some experience in alternative portfolio investment. This type of investment has elements of portfolio management and alternative investment.
When talking about the company , do not limit yourself to discussing the company’s mission and vision, accomplishments, discuss the trends of the industry/sector this particular company specializes in. This will express your enthusiasm and knowledge about the job and set you apart from the other candidates.
Don’t : Give generic answers like xyz company is my dream company. Generic answers will never earn any brownie points and if you fail to provide substantial causes like your passion/knowledge about the services this company specializes in, your knowledge about the sector , avoid such answers.
Don’t : Give amateurish answers such as looking for a good paying job. It is a given that jobs with good compensation and benefits scheme are demanded by everybody. However this should not mean that you start the conversation with how much the company can pay you. If possible include anecdotes about how you have read that xyz company is employee friendly and rewards motivated employees. You will be putting the intended message across clearly without sounding offensive.
